New Cadet Racing
This Sunday is our next session in the ‘New Cadet Race’ Series.
Let’s have a big turn-out!!!!
- The new course is aimed at all Cadets who can sail and to wish participate in a race with a shorter course, more laps over a reduced time.
- There will be prizes for the older cadet as well as the less experienced sailors. A coach in a dedicated Support Rib will support the races.
Races will be raced under the TBYC Sailing Instructions. http://www.tbyc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/TBYC_2015_SI.pdf
Your guide
Cadet course
- There will be an optional briefing at 08.00 (1 hour before start.)
- The race will be a windward leeward course starting at the committee boat. It will be the second start with the Fast and Slow Monohulls at 09.03. (Time plus 3 minutes).
- First check the number of laps on the blackboard at the top of the slipway and / or check with Support Rib on the water. Your race does not use a shortened course.
- Once on the water, go to the Committee boat and look for the last number on the BACK of the boat, which indicates D on the diagram / or check with Support Rib on the water.
- On the starting signal, you will cross the line and beat to the CADET BUOY, which is a special buoy marked with a C. This will be your windward mark.
- Check whether a Red or Green flag is displayed on the Committee boat; Red leave marks to port, Green leave marks to starboard.
- Run or reach down to the course. You must NOT go through the line on the downwind leg (as in the sailing instructions).
- Beat up through the line and onto the Cadet buoy and continue until the displayed number of laps are completed.
- As you cross the line the committee boat will record your time. They will not give you a signal. The Support Rib will blow a whistle unless is needed elsewhere.

I would just like to formally thank Steve, Karen and their team for a seamless and professional service last night and for the incredible efforts they put into the preparation in the weeks before – Karen was an absolute star. I have had many people comment to me today on how delicious the food was, how efficient and friendly service was and what a delight it was to enjoy such a fantastic meal. We are very lucky to have great caterers who work extremely hard to deliver the perfect event for us – the best one we’ve had in years!
Grateful thanks to Lorraine and her bar team for their equally seamless and professional service and hard work. No-one waited long for drinks, empties were cleared efficiently and the atmosphere was a fun and friendly one.
I also think everyone will agree how brilliant everyone looked in their standard smart black uniforms with gold ties and bow ties. It tied everything together and made for a very professional feel to the evening.

On Sunday our Racing (Petal Plate) coincides with the Southend Half Marathon, however as long as people turn up reasonably early you should not be affected. the important times are as follows:
09:25 The Seafront will be closed to traffic, therefore if you are not parked by the Dinghy park by then you will have to park on local roads.
09:35 Movement of boats from the Dinghy Park to the Beach will be stopped. Soon after 2000 runners will be entering the Seafront, so please don’t think you have the right of way after this time. Why not get your boat on the beach and then get changed.
After the racing there should be gaps in runners to allow boats to cross, marshalls should try and help. Although I would suggest we should be giving way to runners.
12:30 The road reopens to get your car back out of the Car Park.

On Sunday we have Cadet Training.
The aim of this session is to get the youngsters ready to race competitively, Olympic style!
Our target age is approximately 11 – 14 years, possibly those who have raced in the Pico Series and/or ‘New Cadet Racing’, but not excluding others who have basic skills.

The training exercises will cover:
Starting a race – be the first!
Fast tacking – every 20 seconds or less!
Mini-Races – 10 minutes a race, lots of manoeuvres and chances to win!
Fast and exciting ….. see you on Sunday.

Please be aware that the bar will be closing at 15:00 this Saturday. I believe this should not affect many members as sailing is reasonably early, however our apologies if you had planned to use it after this time.
With our Grand Summer Ball taking place in the evening it does require a lot of people and hard work to be able to prepare the bar area and I am sure it is appreciated that this is only hampered by people using the bar.
Thanks. Paul

Four Lasers travelled from TBYC to Aldenham Sailing Club on Sunday 7th June, it was part of the Thames grand prix series and had a turnout of 27 boats, the wind was a lovely 8-10mph with a few large gusts thrown in from various angles just to keep you on your toes, and any missed tack or gybe could lose you half a dozen boats as the fleet was very very tight. There were some very good sailors from the circuit there with brand new boats, so it was good to see how we are doing outside of club racing, and also a test of the rules as these guys do not take prisoners !! Our overall results were Rick Paxman 11th, Nick Turner 13th, Jeremy Doran 24th, Richard Sands 25th. Lovely small and friendly club and a really good lake to do our 1st “pond” open on.
