It is with great sadness that, following a short illness, on Saturday 11th July, Norman Absolom passed away whilst on holiday in Spain at the age of 77.
Norman’s first love was sailing and he became a member of Thorpe Bay Yacht Club in 1969 when he purchased his first Mirror dinghy and joined the fast growing Mirror fleet. Racing was always very close against the Johnson’s, Bristow’s, Paul Weeden, Nigel Campling, Ronnie Barnes to name but a few. In the mid 70’s, Norman also owned a couple of cruisers that were used for weekend’s away, family holidays and of course local club racing. In September 1980 he took delivery of his new pride and joy, a Mirage 28 he named Magnificent Obsession. She was cruised and raced regularly around the East Coast and the Continent for 34 years until last September when she, along with 13 other yachts, was hit by a commercial dredger in thick fog whilst moored at Medway Yacht Club and was written off.
Racing success over the years included club and open meeting victories, class wins in the Nore Race and numerous local trophy races. His favourite race of all time was the Thorpe Goodwin Race which he won twice overall. He particularly enjoyed the competition against Phil Crawford, Frank Coppins and Bob Walker.
Norman was a true gentleman and will be greatly missed by family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:20 hrs on Thursday 13th August at the Southend Crematorium.

New Cadet Racing
Another chance to sail in the ‘New Cadet Series’ and not so windy this time…. hopefully!
See you Sunday.
- The new course is aimed at all Cadets who can sail and to wish participate in a race with a shorter course, more laps over a reduced time.
- There will be prizes for the older cadet as well as the less experienced sailors. A coach in a dedicated Support Rib will support the races.
Races will be raced under the TBYC Sailing Instructions. http://www.tbyc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/TBYC_2015_SI.pdf
Your guide
Cadet course
- There will be an optional briefing at 17.00 (1 hour before start.)
- The race will be a windward leeward course starting at the committee boat. It will be the second start with the Fast and Slow Monohulls at 18.03. (Time plus 3 minutes).
- First check the number of laps on the blackboard at the top of the slipway and / or check with Support Rib on the water. Your race can be shortened by the Support Rib.
- Once on the water, go to the Committee boat and look for the last number on the BACK of the boat, which indicates D on the diagram / or check with Support Rib on the water.
- On the starting signal, you will cross the line and beat to the CADET BUOY, which is a special buoy marked with a C. This will be your windward mark.
- Check whether a Red or Green flag is displayed on the Committee boat; Red – leave marks to port, Green – leave marks to starboard.
- Run or reach down to the course. You must NOT go through the line on the downwind leg (as written in the sailing instructions).
- Beat up through the line and onto the Cadet buoy and continue until the displayed number of laps are completed.
- As you cross the line the committee boat will record your time. They will not give you a signal. The Support Rib will blow a whistle unless is needed elsewhere.

Would all Shark team, support boat personnel and parents, meet With Rupert Snow in the commodore bar at the club, this Thursday at 7.30 for a half hour meeting?
There will need to be considerable parent support to enable the Island Camp to go ahead and it would be good to get an idea of how many tents etc. we can get hold of.
So as to be able to communicate effectively please could you email Rupert ([email protected]). This is particularly important if you are not going to make the meeting on Thursday.
Thank you
Rupert

We have decided to hold a party to celebrate the end of cadet week for all the adults (no children except cadets 16 years and over please!) on Saturday 8th August from 8.00pm. We will be entertained for the evening by the fantastic DJ, Micky G – so come and relive your youth from Churchills days! We won’t be offering catering on the evening so make sure to eat before coming down and indulging in that toffee vodka!
If you would like to join us, tickets are priced at just £5 each and will be available to purchase from behind the bar from this Wednesday, 22nd July. You can buy tickets right up until the evening of the event.
All members of the club are very welcome, not just cadet parents!
I look forward to seeing you there.
