It’s now coming to the end of the a good sailing year and we are putting the Newsbuoy together. In a whole year there is a lot of personal stories on activities you may have completed (or plan to soon) and other members in the club would really like to read them.
Please let the Janet know at [email protected] if you will be able to submit something for inclusion in our high quality magazine.

TBYC are proud to present:-
“Wildwood Jack”
Playing live Saturday 24th October at 8.30pm
www.wildwoodjack.com
After a successful tour of Denmark in the summer & appearances at festivals up and down the UK, Thorpe Bay Yacht Club are delighted to welcome Wildwood Jack – Adam Piggott & Jayne Freeman – to Southend.
Melodic songs with guitar and ukulele fingerstyle sophistication drawing influences from folk, country and world music.
Wildwood Jack is the acoustic duo Adam Piggott and Jayne Freeman. Touring on regular basis – as well as being featured on BBC local radio – they play all over the south east with frequent gigs in Aldeburgh.
Their sound is a harmonious blend of fingerstyle guitar and ukulele and has been described as a mix of Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen, Nanci Griffith and Ry Cooder. Memorable live shows can feature anything from traditional songs and tunes to a reworked punk classic or even Pink Floyds ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond’.
Adam says “Everything we do is about maximising the sound and capabilities of the acoustic guitar and ukulele together when we play live. Our style has evolved from playing and experimenting over the years with a lot of influence from folk, country, blues and jazz”.
This is a TBYC-sponsored event – so come along with friends & enjoy what promises to be a very memorable evening of live music!

In light of the fact there is a rather important game for England this evening (!), the Rugby will be showing in the Commodore’s Bar.
We have therefore arranged for the Magic Show with Oliver Tabor to commence around 9.15-9.30pm to allow for this so that everyone can join in with the free members’ evening.
In addition, you will be able to order Tapas on a ‘walk-in’ basis from the hatch if you wish to have some food this evening but haven’t pre-booked. Those who have pre-booked will be given priority for the dishes and the time they wish to have food. Those who order on the evening will be served as soon as possible strictly on a first-come-first-served basis.
I look forward to seeing you there!

A dynamic group of youngsters represented Thorpe Bay Yacht Club in this year’s Interclub Team Race, hosted by Thames Estuary Yacht Club. Last Sunday the TBYC team won the Cadet class for the second year running. Peter Snow, Millie and Vicky Little, Greg Watson and Jacob Allard left the beach in windy conditions and were escorted around the pier to practise their starts and get used to the pretty difficult conditions. The ‘Little’ girls made an excellent start leading their class, whilst Peter Snow was steadily moving up the fleet eventually gaining first place by the end of the race. All the team performed well and are a credit to our club.

I am pleased to say that the next free members’ night will take place on Saturday 3rd October.
We will be offering you something slightly different this time and are very excited to announce that Oliver Tabor, a multi-award winning member of the Magic Circle and one of the top magicians in the country will be entertaining us with a night of magic. We are very fortunate to be able to welcome Oliver to the club – as you can imagine he is in great demand and gets booked up a long way in advance!

3 Thorpe Bay Lasers travelled to the lovely Tollesbury Sailing Club on Sunday 27th September, as usual we were greeted on our arrival with bacon butties and tea and coffee to start the day. There was a lovely 12mph breeze and clear blue skies. 15 Lasers entered which was 7 visitors and 8 home boats, the racing was very close and all 3 races were back to back of 2 longish laps with good beats, reaches and runs making for exciting racing in a steadily building breeze.
The end results were;
Rick Paxman 1st, 1st, 2nd for overall 1st place
Nick Turner 6th, 6th, 4th for overall 5th place
Michael Airey 11th, 7th, 6th for overall 7th place
This is a must again for next year.
