Interesting Links For Tidal Surge and Sea Wall

Found these sites very interesting for the Tidal Surge this morning. the Surge has been quoted as the largest since records began, eclipsing 1953 so it was pleasing to see a 3 foot gap between the top of the current Sea wall and the crest of the waves at 2am this morning. 2 beach huts were dislodged from their supports with one being destroyed. Amazing how many club members and rest of the public were up at 2am!

Also for those interested in the Proposed Sea Wall Build there is an exhibition at Uncle Toms Cabin this weekend Saturday and Sunday where the BBC will be interviewing and Broadcasting 11 am Sunday. I know there are alot of members who would like to know more and see for themselves so they can make informed decisions.
The quoted metric of 1 in 200 year risk happened in the early hours of this morning with Shoebury common and Thorpe Bay Sea Wall passing the test with flying colours.

hope the above is of interest,

cheers

Peter

Interesting observations, Peter, and as one of those who could have slept through but decided to venture out, I wholeheartedly agree.

How long before SBC publish their response, or was it written in advance???

    Peter,

How did you measure that 3 foot gap please?

Also, where have you had it confirmed that ‘ the … 1 in 200 year risk happened in the early hours of this morning?

    Thanks

Peter did not need to measure it as it was at least 3 foot from the top of the wall. Those that we’re watching saw it plus we have the photos. The seaweed left on the slipway this morning indicates the highest point that waves pushed it to. It’s probably still there. The water was high but the existing wall was well up to the job plus our beach is now smoothed out so dinghy launching should be a lot easier. Win Win I would say.

Just imagine if this ridiculous wall and gate were already built, there would be no sailing this weekend as it would be closed. it is not required as has been proved over the last few days with the biggest tide surge for over 60 years, when I looked Shoebury was still there and was not flooded. It would be nice if the council took note and retracted from their pathetic stance of rail roading this unsightly wall development just to shift a mound of soil and extract some cash from a developer.
come on members get behind friends of shoebury common and BERA , turn up at the meetings and help get this stooped before they ruin our lovely seafront.

Couldn’t agree more with Peter, John and Barry. I was down there from 01.30 to past high water and the wall did it’s job at Thorpe Bay with 3 ft spare. Unfortunately my photos failed! Do we know when the last tide of this height occurred?

It is not just getting rid of the soil and getting the developer’s cash. SBC’s real agenda is the future rateable income from the 450(?) extra houses they can allow at the Garrison.

The meetings are important but we should also be letting the Councillors who support this know that they can’t pull the wool over the electorate’s eyes.

    Regards

In case SBC do manage to follow through with their plans, we need to make sure that the gate on our slipway does not impede launching and recovery of boats the 99.9999999% of the time that it is not in the open position.

Can General Committee please confirm that they are in conversation with SBC about their proposed gate design, right now, as we speak, influencing as necessary?

I’d like to think so, because without this input we could be well and truly shafted.
