Many of you will know about the UK National Cadet Class Association (UKNCCA) – this piece is aimed at those who don’t. Our family are relatively new to the world of dinghy sailing, the structure of the sport and the various class associations. After having attended several excellent Cadet events this year, most recently the Cadet Nationals 2010 hosted by the Royal Torbay Yacht Club last week, I thought I would write this piece to make others aware who might be in a similar position us.
So far this year with the UKNCCA we have been to Rutland Water, WPNSA (2012 sailing venue – staying in the Team GBR hotel), Torquay (twice), Burnham and Waldringfield; next month we’re off to Stone and Burnham.
What’s the attraction?
I guess it’s the one-design aspect. Even with the handicap, Club racing with a Cadet can be demoralising at times when everyone else zooms past but when you are up against a fleet made up entirely of Cadets it becomes a different story. The Cadet is a three-sail racing dinghy with a very tunable rig and symmetrical kite. The Cadet will teach you all you need to know for when you graduate to bigger and faster things. Just look at the honours board to see who dominates it – an ex-Cadet.
Let’s use last week as an example. There were 82 Cadets on the water at Torquay with crews and helms between the ages of 9 and 17 competing against each other and displaying remarkable levels of skill and seamanship in the process. TBYC were represented by three boats crewed by George & Ben Warrington, Alex Warrington & Laura Lloyd and Matthew Lloyd & Harvey Turner. The children and adults who attended all had a good time and learnt much in the process. If you’re interested in learning more about the UKNCCA please follow the link http://www.cadetclass.org.uk or see Howard Warrington or myself.

Good News. The new cubicles have been installed in the ladies showers, this now gives us five brand new powerful showers along with double the changing area for our sailing girls.
many thanks to Nick Elmore for arranging and Michael Whistler for fitting them.

As Sprint captain, I would like to express my thanks to all who helped rescue Ian and Anita Douce last saturday. I didn’t learn the full story until I saw the Douces at church on sunday morning. I knew they had been rescued, but didn’t know how.
Special thanks to Chris and Paul Clarke, who jumped into the water to help them. They then sailed the Sprint back to shore. A further note of thanks to Steve Hopper who gave assistance.
The wind was light when they set out. But it steadily strengthened to F4-5. Too much for beginners. Beach cats are fairly stable. But Ian fell overboard, rather than capsize. The Clarkes forsook their own racing to assist others who were in trouble. A noble act indeed. Thanks to all.
Andrew.

Unfortunately Boatacs are closing their seafront shop this week, so we will need to shop at either TCS or Boatacs in London Road, Westcliff for those last minute emergencies and regular chandlery.

Following the success of the Laser Pico as the TBYC Cadet/family boat of choice and numbers soon to exceed 70 in the boat park we are very aware of how much easier it is to train and develop sailing skills when all in the same boats.
As the kids grow in size and ability we would like to guide the next step up to be the RS FEVA, there are already a few in the club and in the race group of Cadet Week. Built in a similar material to the PICO they have good durability and the rig has the asymetric kite for excellent performance.
www.rsfeva.org/
once we have got a good nucleus of Feva’s back in the club then it is proposed to offer training days to develop the boat handling skills and then Race Training.
If you are interested in the RS FEVA let me know as i am putting a deal together with RS at the moment and you maybe able to take advantage of a good price.
thanks
