Sprint 15 Nationals Round up

Published by under Catamarans,Members

Another event that as a club we have demonstrated that we welcome these events and that we support them well. We have had many excellent comments from sailors that were visiting and this would not have been possible without our members. This includes the Sprint 15 sailors that entered but also worked hard until they were on the water, all those that volunteered and went on a Rota (some supplying boats), those members and cadets that came down from the club house at short notice to help on the beach (Rupert Snow is memorable “Aim at me”), the staff we employ (over 900 pints of beer were poured) and finally everybody that were friendly to all the visitors over the weekend.

Even though everybody does this unpaid, please remember this has brought required funds into the club in entry fees, catering and refreshments behind the bar.

There was success for Thorpe Bay out of the 83 boats sailed with the us winning the Team Event. Finley Cullender was 1st Junior, Gerald and Nathan Sverdloff was 2nd Two up. Steve Healy was 6th overall, 1st over 50 and 5th Most Improved, Gary Sverdloff was 2nd Most Improved, Keith Persin 3rd Heavyweight. The following Thorpe Bay Sailors were all in the top quarter overall Steve Healy, Andrew Wood, Chris Tillyer, Jim Bowie, Gary Sverdloff, Peter Thompson and Andrew Hannah. Although well done to everybody else. Peter Thompson without doubt showed us all up, sailing in shorts and shirt, often standing (must be his skills from the paddle boards) and being there at the front of many races.

Thank you to everybody for your time.

Paul Morgan (and Steve Healy), Sprint 15 Captains.

Southerly Cup – Congratulations to Nigel Campling

Published by under Club Notices,Members

Nigel Campling RYS

Congratulations to Nigel Campling for winning the 2014 Southerly Regatta

The 2014 Southerly Regatta took places at the home of sailing in the UK, the Royal Yacht Squadron. The race briefing on Sunday 25th May required all crew to wear blazers and tie (of course), and was followed by an excellent hog roast looking out to the Solent.

In Race 1 started on Monday with 3 knots of west bound tide and light winds on the start line. Southerly 42RST, Legato, were first to the mark and lead for the rest of the race, taking the canon and the win by a few seconds to Southerly 115, Dutch Courage with a gaggle of 38’s coming in behind.

Tuesday dawned to a little more breeze and again more drizzle which quickly cleared. The 2nd race started with a good 10-15 knot beat up towards hill head and anti-clockwise around the Solent. With the race officer being told that the fleet only draw 1m with the keels up he gave the option to prove this and to sail across a very visible Leap Spit, which some competitors did to great gains.

Race 4 was a longer affair with many buoys around the Solent. With 2 knots of tide pushing boats over the line, the start was lively, but clean. The North Sails Rib was out shouting words of advice to all boats and the fleet split into two packs. The Southerly 46RS, Gneiss Fantasy, took the final cannon of the event and Southerly 38, Distraction taking the win on corrected times, with Southerly 38, Bettina 2nd and Southerly 42RST, Legato 3rd.

Prizegiving that evening was held at the RYS “Castle” with a champagne reception and an excellent three course dinner. Winner of the Southerly Cup for the second time (2012 & 2014) : Nigel Campling, Southerly 115, Dutch Courage of Cowes.

“Little Americas Cup” Book Research and Club History

Published by under Members

I have been getting some of the historical documents that the club has in the form of scrap books, photographs, etc and have started making them available on the Internet to allow all members to view them. I have also been approached by a French man called François Chevalier who is currently writing a book on the subject and so my initial uploads has been around the International Catamaran Challenge Trophy when it was at TBYC from 1962-69. If you have anything that you feel that he maybe interested in then please let me know so I could make them available to him.

As for the club history I hope that it will slowly become available at the following link TBYC History on ISSUU, although all the links will be available on our history page.

Update on Beach Re-cycling and Proposed Flood Gate 21st Jan 2014

Published by under Club Notices,Members

During late December your General Committee attended an on site meeting with Richard Atkins from Southend Borough Council together with the Council contractors to discuss the proposed sliding flood gate and their plans for beach re-cycling along the foreshore.

Since this meeting, we have been in regular and meaningful discussion with the Council officers and their contractors and it is encouraging to report that our Council are very supportive of TBYC and are prepared to listen and react to the concerns that your General Committee have and continue to put forward.
