Update on Beach Re-cycling and Proposed Flood Gate 21st Jan 2014

Published by under Club Notices,Members

During late December your General Committee attended an on site meeting with Richard Atkins from Southend Borough Council together with the Council contractors to discuss the proposed sliding flood gate and their plans for beach re-cycling along the foreshore.

Since this meeting, we have been in regular and meaningful discussion with the Council officers and their contractors and it is encouraging to report that our Council are very supportive of TBYC and are prepared to listen and react to the concerns that your General Committee have and continue to put forward.

Update on Beach Re-cycling.

Published by under Club Notices

Hopefully the recent storms are now behind us and last week the Council made a start on beach re cycling at Shoebury Common to provide some protection for the beach hut owners east of our slipway who have taken a severe pounding during the past weeks.

I fully understand the concerns by members that there is talk of the Council removing sand from the Yacht Club beach to re cycle to the beach to the east.

To advise I have received a confirmation from Richard Atkins of SBC stating that the Council Contractors will not be removing sand from the Yacht Club bay – that is between the concrete groyne and the first wooden groyne. Furthermore SBC have also confirmed the contractors will be re cycling sand later this week from the second and third bays to the west – to beach hut owners to the east as well as to the Yacht Club beach to maintain our launching facilities.

A further report to follow on the beach re cycling and proposed flood gate.

Donate one of your old SD Cards

Published by under Club Notices

Have you outgrown one of your SD Cards and it is now sat in a draw doing nothing. Please could you donate it to the club. We have a need for a few SD cards, but they don’t have to be large. If you can, please put them in an envelope and drop them behind the bar for my attention. As they say “Reuse, Reduce, Recycle.”

Thanks.

TBYC on Facebook and Twitter

Published by under Club Notices,Social

A few members have recently mentioned how good Facebook and Twitter are when wanting to get involved in social discussions and networking. So this is a reminder that TBYC is on both for anybody that wasn’t aware, especially if you have only recently joined those facilities. Links have been added to the top of our webpage so you can access and follow us without having problems searching. We are happy for you to retweet and share items from TBYC.

It is with deep sadness that I have to announce that Leslie Sheen passed away yesterday. Les was previously an active member of our cruising section and until recently enjoyed his lunchtime visits to the club with his wife Janet and friends.
Our sincere condolences to Janet and family.
The Club burgee was flown at half mast today as a sign of respect and funeral details will be advised in due course.

Update on Shoebury Common Flood Defence Scheme – an opportunity to respond

Published by under Club Notices

Thank’s for the update, Commodore! This is a matter close to our hearts, so it’s a shame that the ‘comments’ option was turned off. The best way to reduce conjecture is to repond quickly to members concerns. I’m sure that we’re all much happier now.

Unfortunately no one from General Committee attended the public meeting on the 16th at Shoebury High School which the members that did attend found disappointing and inexplicable.

Update on Shoebury Common Flood Defence Scheme.

Published by under Club Notices

A reminder – there is a follow up meeting hosted by Friends of Shoebury Common at Shoebury High School on Monday 16th December 2013 from 7.30 pm to 10.00pm. The meeting will be chaired by Peter Holmes from BBC Essex Radio and will provide a further opportunity for questions and answers regarding the flood defence schemes.

For the past two weeks, we have been in discussion with the council in which we have advised our concerns with the detail of the operational aspects of the Councils proposals and the actual necessity of a flood gate on the area around the slipway and the cobbled ramp which may affect our launching and access. This is in addition to the aesthetic impact of replacing the railings to the West of the slipway with a raised sea wall.

The Council have replied in writing that the present indicative plans show that the opening would be as wide as the present gap and they welcome the opportunity to work in co-operation with the club and will do all possible to accommodate the club’s views and concerns with the design.

At this stage of the proposed development, there are no actual published design drawings of the proposed flood gate. The Council have agreed to an on site meeting to review the indicative plans and your General Committee will petition the Council to ensure that any flood gate will be unobtrusive and that our access to the slipway and beach will not be affected.

Further reports will follow as soon as the design is published.
