Allen Hurricane 5.9 SX Traveller Series and Inland Championship 2026 at Rutland Sailing Club

This year we have Allen Brothers kindly sponsoring our Traveller Series which includes the Inland Championships at Rutland Water, Starcross SC TT Open 6/7 June, Royal Yorkshire YC TT Open 18/19 July and culminating at the National Championships at Thorpe Bay YC 14/16 August.

Running alongside this, Insurance brokers Navigators & General have kindly offered a new jib to be given away at the Nationals. Each boat that enters one of the above events will get a ticket into the draw for each event they do, with Starcross and Bridlington counting as 2 entries. A great way to encourage our fleet to travel to the events!

15 Hurricanes entered for the Inlands. It was great to see Mike and Harry from the Royal Yorkshire YC make the long trip south to come and join boats from Thorpe Bay YC, Gurnard SC, Bala SC, Stokes Bay SC and Stone SC.

The wind was forecast to be on the lighter side but the Saturday dawned with sunshine and a nice breeze. Soon turned chilly though! Rutland Water hosted our Inlands alongside their Cat Open so there was lots of activity on the water with various other cat classes from Nacra 20's to the Catapult.

With 15 boats and the largest fleet by a long way, we were kindly given our own start.

Race 1 got under way and Thorpe Bay's recent European Champions, Alex Farrall & Alex Warrington got off to a good start taking the first win, with Stone's Richie Hanmore & Matt Kimber 2nd and Julian Reichert & Jeremy Sandford also from TBYC in 3rd. New helm (me) with my new crew Richard Turner, having had a quick "sail wash" before the start, got away nicely and looking good before one of the quite large gusts caught us out and over we went for the 2nd sail wash of the day!

Race 2 saw the return of Stone's Jack Tindale with new crew from TBYC Maisie Allen, take the win, Alex & Alex 2nd and Richie & Matt in 3rd.

The wind was starting to drop but still there were plenty of big gusts to keep us all on our toes downwind. If you got one, big gains could be made.

Race 3 belonged to Jack & Maisie again with Thorpe Bay's Adrian & Steph Bunting playing an absolute blinder in the shifts and coming home 2nd along with another TBYC team of Ben Warrington & Sophie Boygle taking 3rd.

Racing done for the day, so the usual Hurricane evening antics began. We always have such a great time when we all go away together. It's the essence of the fleet and is what makes is so enjoyable.

Day 2 and more sun to begin with but a bit less breeze. The wind direction was now giving us lots to think about. The breeze was as shifty as one of Del Boy's deals and more holes than we cared for. There were big gains if you got it right.

Race 4, Jack & Maisie had really found the groove and took yet another bullet. This time it was the turn of Bala SC's John Tuckwell & Mike Cleaver to take a well deserved 2nd with Alex & Alex finding 3rd.

Jack & Maisie were looking tough to beat but the two Alex's were doing their best to out smart them. Race 5 worked a bit better for the TBYC pair, although it was Richie & Matt taking the win with Alex & Alex in 2nd and Julian & Jeremy in 3rd.

So now with some serious match racing going on between the top two, Jack & Maisie just had to hold their nerve and keep Alex & Alex in check.

Race 6 - now with some really serious holes and shifts in the wind, it was very hard to read. Alex & Alex had an enormous lead and a sudden 20 degree header tipped them in to windward. A rapid righting, which is never quick on a Hurricane, put them back in the mix.

It was Gurnard SC's Ash Holmes & James Gadsby who managed to find the right way and take the win. Stokes Bay SC pairing of Adam Charlesworth & Richard Robinson in 2nd and Stone/TBYC pair of Geoff Tindale and Jess Bunting in a very well sailed 3rd.

Many congratulations to Jack Tindale and Maisie Allen on sailing a terrific event. Inland Champions 2026!

With many thanks to our sponsors; Allen and Navigators & General for their kind support.

The next Traveller event: Starcross SC - see you there!
