Phil Crawford’s Sandhopper Sailing Tips

1. Make sure hull is clean

2. Get weather forecast

3. Check sailing instructions

4. Get a good crew!

5. Don’t hoist genoa until ready to leave mooring

6. If wind against tide, lower main sail before picking up mooring

7. Tune rig for conditions:

– shroud tension

– genoa trim

– set main halyard for the run

– pull on Cunningham for the beat

8. If leach of genoa is flapping, pull on leach line until it stops

9. If leach of genoa is flapping, pull on leach line until it stops

10. Launch spinnaker pole before hoisting spinnaker

11. Lower spinnaker pole height in light wind

12. Helm to hold spinnaker sheets during gybe to keep sail filling

13. Have barber haulers tight enough so that you can ease mainsail

14. In heavy weather, on spinnaker reach, bear away and dump the main to avoid broach plus ease kicker if need be

15. Helm to face forward when tacking the boat

16. When approaching finish line, pick the nearest end.

17. Discuss mark rounding

18. Before start, check which end of the line is favoured: sail up the beat, check compass bearings

19. Allow for the tide

20. Decide which way to go down the run

21. Plan your tactics!
