TBYC Structured Learning for All Ages

The Thorpe Bay Yacht Club (TBYC) Start Sailing Scheme makes learning to sail fun, safe, and rewarding. Our structured programme helps cadets develop essential sailing skills while gaining confidence on the water.

Progress is recorded in three logbooks, allowing each student to track and celebrate their achievements as they move through the stages. Cadets are able to participate and learn without any previous sailing experience. Our aim is to ensure all cadet sailing, land based sessions and other cadet activities are innovative and enjoyable, helping our young people grow in confidence together with their peers, making new friends and experiencing new activities.

Designed for Estuary Sailing

Our scheme is purpose-built for the conditions at Thorpe Bay, a tidal estuary, requiring the utmost respect for the tides and changing weather, together with appreciating the busy shipping corridor. This offers a safe introduction to tidal sailing and seamanship. It is open to all members of any age, from complete beginners to those looking to build on existing experience.

We aim to:

  • Encourage young members and parents to get involved in club sailing.
  • Teach practical seamanship and water safety skills.
  • Foster confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong love of sailing.

All instruction is delivered by volunteer club members including qualified instructor volunteers. A parent or recognised guardian must remain engaged and involved, often on the beach/in the water during training sessions, depending on the level of participation.
