SOLENT UPDATE

Published by at 11:46 under Racing

force 6-8 was saturdays forecast with more predicted for sunday. 35 sunfast 37s competed in four races over two days, we knew it was going to be rough when we started to heel on bare polls , the starts were chaotic and full on with everybody trying for poll position and trying to survive the conditions,

team Apollo lead the fleet and won the first race even after losing their steering and having to resort to the emergency tiller for the majority of the race, they used the broken steering as an excuse to limp back into port solent flat out with their kite up and would miss race 2. team windrush surprised everyone and finished just behind team blue jacket to take 3rd and 4th with  team sand star in 6th place. great result for tbyc.

race two saw windrush whoop both blue jacket and sandstar to become overall leader from tbyc overnight.

Sundays weather was worse with force 8-9 forecast, Apollo again lead the fleet to take first position with windrush again whooping the other two for tbyc, race 4 was again won by Apollo making them overall winners of the weekend, for tbyc windrush was 2nd blue jacket 3rd and sand star 4th, the fleet results will be published later this week so we can see where we all came amongst the rest of the fleet.

A great weekend of extreme sailing was enjoyed by all and we will definitely be doing it again next year, so why not get a team together of your sailing mates and join us?

I cant wait to see the video taken by chas and martin.

What a brilliant weekend and I am sure there will be some excellent stories coming out of it that will be suitably embelished by the time they are published. For me the funniest episode of the weekend (apart from beating Barry) was watching Sandstar with Steve and Peter approach the leeward mark in the first race on Saturday. As we approached the mark we could see another fleet of boats in the distance preparing for a start, what did not become apparant until we were much closer was that our turning mark was also the pin end of their line. Well Pete coulld not have timed it better. He was reaching in a great speed on port and they were reaching towards him also at great speed on starboard, both aiming at the same mark. As luck would have it he didn’t quite make it, much to the enjoyment of all the other TBYC boats who were in close enough proximity to see the incident develop. The childish giggling could be heard from all the TBYC boats which got louder and louder every time they ducked another boat. I think I counted about 15 ducks before Pete managed to find a gap to squeeze through by which time Asquith was in such a state that he had to be picked up off the cockpit sole and stuck back on his piece of scaffolding tube (which was now our only means of pointing the boat in the right direction). As luck would have it, by the time we arrived at the said mark, only 20 second later, it was completly clear and as we say the rest is history!
There are plenty more where that came from!!!!

You would have loved it Struan! Mind you with your yachting experience, being truly whipped by Martin, Barry and the rest of us would have hurt i suppose! Seriously, you need to get a team together to challenge the rest of us – no need for ringers, apparantly i am being chucked off the foredeck in favour of Andrew Hannah, for innapproprioate use of the harmonica…so if you bring the bagpipes i’ll crew for you any day!!

Rupert, You know how badly I sail, I would probably sunk the boat in a wipe-out. Sounds like fun though, maybe next time. Like Pete’s idea of a port hand flier in front of the fleet. Being there! done that!
