Working Party

Published by at 11:44 under Working Parties

I would like to thank all those dedicated individuals who turned up on Saturday to help with the work party. The slipway recieved a thorough clean and a new coat of antifoul thanks to Chris Maloney and his team. The bosuns hut had a thorough clean and all the accumulated rubish thrown in the bin so you can now get through the door thanks to Struan, Barry and Paul. The guard boats were given some much needed TLC to see them through to the end of the season Toby and Faz to thank for that. As usual Mike Thomason and his Pico team cleared up the dinghy park and did the gardening along the bank. The gents changing room also recieved a clean up with Grahan Dare and his gang doing the mucking out. Finally Martyn Chas and Steve fitted the new television screen in the main bar, a job we have been thinking about for years that is now done.

It was very satisfying that some 40 or so members turned up and achieved so much in just a couple of hours. The next working party will be some time later this autumn when all the winter jobs get underway so please dont be shy in volunteering as it is a very sociable occasion where you get to meet members from other sections of the club whilst all working together to achieve some very worthwhile results.

Thanks again to all for your efforts on Saturday.

Gordon.

Good to see a flatscreen tv in the mainbar – for use when the appropriate occasions arise. Where do you slot in dvds and how accessible are the camcorder connections?

There are lots of times when both members and visitors could use an internet connection at the club. Why don’t why we have wifi for those that need it. I’ve got a spare router which I would be happy to donate.

I don’t like the idea of a television in the club. How soon will we have unrelated sports programmes? Rugby, football, wrestling, horse racing………….

It might be suitable for the Eagle Working Mens Club, but not for us.

Andrew it will be good for the club and bar for us to watch major sporting events at tbyc as at present we go home to watch them, i do not agree with having wifi as its bad enough with people being addicted to mobile phones let alone laptops. we can also use the screen to play the sailing video that we take. we can take some of the sprints if you like and can fast forward it so it looks like real sailing.

    Hi Andrew,
It appears to have slipped your notice that we had a television in the club for as long as I can remember and I have never had a complaint about its inappropriate use. I would like to think that most members would have an idea of what is acceptable and use it accordingly.

I think television kills conversation. I don’t come to the club to watch television. Why would anyone come to the club to watch sport or anything else, if they have a television at home?

Let us take the cup final as an example. We come off the water, and would be having a good laugh after the race, with plenty of beer and all the banter we love. Then some introvert comes along and switches the telly on, at full blast, to watch Manchester United v London United.

Is that what you have in mind?

I would like to say what a good job the guys had done on the flat screen TV and how it looked so much better than the old TV that’s been there as long as I can remember.

Also one other point is that most clubs now have wifi for members and the visitors to use when attending regattas this really helps with reports and communications and peoples work commitments and family’s when they are away from home.

It just the future and like all of these things consideration and discretion is the key and if we do not move with the times they will move with out us and we all know that just like swimming against the tide you can only do it for so long.

We must try to get the bar sales going during the week, having a tv might entice people to come down and use the bar if they know they can watch some form of sport, or other entertainment, from what I have heard we could all be down the club watching strictly come dancing on a saturday night.

I’m not convinced. The sight of members huddled around a television is redolent of a communal lounge in an old people’s home. The volume would need to be raised to drown-out the conversations of members that don’t want to watch or listen. The television would therefore dominate the club to the exclusion of all others.

As a compromise, I suggest the television is moved to the training room, where the rest of us can leave viewers in peace.

I’m not a fan of footie or rugby but I do know that lots of members have watched both at the club and bought from the bar when the club would otherwise have been empty. I do not believe that it was ever the intention to leave it on ad infinitum. We’ve had a tv for years without a problem so why the objection now?
