Information on Southend on Sea

Southend became a popular seaside resort for people during the Georgian era. Owing to its proximity to London and easy access by train, the town’s economy has largely been based on tourism ever since. Southend Pier is the world’s longest pleasure pier at 1.34 miles (2158 metres). Over the years the pier has suffered fires and ship collisions, most recently in October 2005, but it has been repaired each time.

The town is well known for its seafront attractions. Since 1986, a diesel-hydraulic railway has been running the length of the famous pier, replacing the original electric service which opened in 1890. A fire in October 2005 seriously damaged the far end of the pier. The pier has been beset by a history of fires, the previous occasion, in 1995 destroyed the bowling alley at the start of the pier. The pier was also run through by a boat in 1984.

The Kursaal was one of the earliest theme parks, built at the start of the 20th century. It closed in the 1970s and much of the land was developed as housing. The entrance hall, a listed building, is now a bowling alley arcade (operated by Megabowl) and casino.

Another newer theme park, Adventure Island, developed on land formerly occupied by Peter Pan’s Playground, straddles the pier entrance. It is a popular attraction for both adults and children, and despite a restriction on available land has continued to grow into a large amusement park with over 50 rides. The sea-front also houses a “Sea-Life Centre” aquarium. To the east of the pier was the location of a replica of the Golden Hind housing a waxworks collection.

The cliff gardens, which included Never Never Land, and Victorian bandstand were a popular attraction until slippage in 2003 made parts of the cliffs unstable, and the bandstand has been removed for safe keeping. The council has expressed its desire to re-erect the bandstand but a suitable location has yet to be found.

A modern cliff lift links the base of the High Street with the new pier entrance. The older cliff lift, a short funicular railway, is located a few hundred metres away, now closed because structural and mechanical work needs to be done in order to meet European Union Legislation which classes it as a cablecar.

Leisure, Culture & Tourism

Seven miles of award-winning beaches (including the Jubilee Beach – always above high tide), the longest pleasure pier in the world, over eighty parks and open spaces of varying size, forty playgrounds, six nature and fourteen historic conservation areas, sixteen allotment sites … and that’s just for starters.

There are also four museums, two theatres, two art galleries, seven libraries, three casinos, a bowling alley, a sealife centre, the largest fun park in the south-east, a skateboard park, five leisure centres, a watersports centre, even an airport.… and there’s more.

To the west is Leigh, a haven for those with an artistic frame of mind, while Shoebury, at the other end of the town, has a long and varied history, including being the home to the Shoebury Garrison.

Southend also has a brand new, state of the art building for the South East Essex College, is the site for the new University of Essex, and is served by two major railway networks.

Plus, pubs, clubs, shopping, lots of places to eat … Southend has it all!

Last weekend saw tough sailing conditions at the Canvey Hurricane Open, with gusts reaching 25 + kts and confused seas.

On the Friday, three TBYC boats were hoping to do 7 mile delivery trip to the Island SC but common sense prevailed as the Southerly gusting F6 winds battered the shoreline. Instead Pete, Wayne and myself decided it was perfect to take my old day boat out for a sail on the R. Crouch. With a ton of lead in her long keel, we blasted up wind with water everywhere, what fun.

Saturday morning in better sailing conditions, four Hurricanes left TBYC to race in the Open meeting at Canvey, first start @ 12.30pm. We left the beach in a SW, F4-5 and within 25 minutes arrived safely at Canvey. For those who don’t really know the Island Yacht Club, it’s based at the East end of Canvey on a mud flat, I mention this as I had forgot to raise my rudders and dagger boards on the way in to the slipway. It was when Wayne, my crew said that the sailors coming out to meet us were only up to their ankles (F**k**G Sh*t) It was mention later that nobody had seen a Hurricane do12 kts land yachting for a while.

Even before racing got underway there was casualties going to the start line with a couple of capsizes. The Blower/Abbas team from TBYC on their first Cat open and sailing in windy conditions decided enough was enough and retired to the bar. Twelve Hurricanes started after the ‘A’ Class start and dashed around the Up wind-Down wind course with plenty of action and close racing happening. The second and third races started back to back in even more gusting conditions taking its toll on the fleet. It was during the third race, Chris Hull, TBYC and Kevin Turner, IYC, had a T-Bone experience (No! not on the BBQ) but a typical Port / Starboard rule. True to the camaraderie in the fleet, both boats were quickly fixed by the crews, ready for racing the next day. Chris has now been re-named Buster! As in Buster Hull by Glenn Stoneham, who was watching from the bar. Good one mate.

Sunday started dull with light winds but this was soon to change to a SW F5-6 and gusting more. The ‘A’ Class boats decided the conditions were not suitable for them and retired and only nine Hurricanes started the first race on a similar course to Saturday but with the top spreader mark lowered, so as not beam reach in the windy conditions. This was where most of the capsizing and damage was happening with several boats retiring early making the final race a five horse race. Wayne and I were pleased with our 5th overall position in the regatta and the fact we didn’t crash and burn all weekend. The best experience for us was the sail back straight after the final race. Kite up and reaching off to the pier at spectacular speeds, we reckon we covered the four miles in 6 mins and back a on the beach from Canvey to Thorpe bay in less than 20 minutes, what a blast!

Well done to Kyle Stoneham and Pete Sherwin, Richard Abbas and Anthony Blower, Buster Hull and Mark Rowe for a good weekend and to my long suffering crew Wayne Miller, who I scare the Sh*t out-off most weekends.
