Dear all,

Having recently taken on the role of Cadet Representative, I am keen to ensure the club meets the needs of both children and adults alike. My belief is that the broad range of ages, abilities and interests amongst the Cadets brings a great opportunity for learning, competition and friendship.

There are times however, when managing the activities of so many Cadets will be challenging and we would therefore be thrilled if more parents could assist with supporting the Cadet committee.

How our children behave and act at the club is our responsibility as parents and club members and whilst we want them to relax and enjoy themselves they must be courteous to other members (Cadet and Adult), the clubs neighbours and the general public. Our activities are highly visible to all.

You will have noticed the recent post regarding ball games at the club, in addition there have been reports that some Cadets are acting unfairly to others. The committee is keen to ensure that these issues are resolved immediately, can I therefore request that your children are reminded to respect others feelings at all times.

Your support in this regard is very much appreciated, should you have any concerns regarding Cadet behaviour please raise these with me personally. I will ensure they are resolved promptly.

Kind regards, Mike

Email – mikeissailing@gmail.com

Below for reference are the details of the Parents Charter which is operated by the club and underpins the role we as parents hold in the effective running of the club.

Parent Charter

TBYC believes that parents/carers and volunteers play a very important role in the development of their children in sailing and ultimately the future of the club. Parents/carers always take the ultimate responsibility for their child/children and any other child left in their care, even when the child is participating in activities being run by a club volunteer.

1. It is the sole responsibility of the parents to supervise their children whenever they are on the

Club premises, surrounding areas and using the Club facilities. Organised Cadet activities

does not excuse the parents of these responsibilities.

2. Understand that the club, although providing support boat facilities during Club activities, is not

responsible for supervision, control or safety of children. At all times parents/carers and guardians have sole responsibility for their children/wards and must appreciate that the club does not exercise supervision or control. Even during club racing the club cannot supervise children, or any other persons, on or off the water.

3. Be aware of the existence and role(s) of the Clubs Officers, to assist and co-operate with them,

also to know Club policy relating to child protection.

4. Health and Safety is of paramount importance, you and your child must be aware

of the following:

The decision whether a Cadet may participate in a race/training session is the

sole responsibility of that person’s legal guardian, or their elected

representative and not that of a volunteer leading a session, or acting as a

Race Officer.

Parents are responsible for pointing out any potential hazards inside and in

the vicinity of the Club House.

Children should not run, or play in the Boat Park.

Children should not swim from the slipway or the concrete groyne, unless

given permission by one of the Club Officials.

5. Offer whatever assistance they can to the running of Cadet Activities and support the

Club and their child wherever possible, eg. by watching races and training sessions,

making sure that their child has appropriate clothing and equipment, supporting social events

and Prize giving etc.

6. Recognise the importance and value of coaches and others within the club, who give their time,

expertise and resources to provide opportunities for young people.

7. In particular the club expects all parents to:

Encourage, by reasonable means, children to actively participate in sailing and in other Club activities.

Recognise that children’s enjoyment and participation in sailing, as a member of this Club is of paramount importance.

Promote and teach fair play by setting a good example.

Teach their children that effort and teamwork, and helping others, are as important as winning.

Help their child to set realistic goals, improve their skills and develop a positive attitude.

Never ridicule or shout at any child for making a mistake.

Acknowledge and applaud good sailing by all competitors.

Accept an official’s judgement, and then review with official or relevant Club Officer at a suitable time.

Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from children’s activities.

FROZEN SHEETS OPEN MEETING 27 DECEMBER 2011

The Race Committee announce that the previously published results were calculated in error not in accordance with the Racing Rules of Sailing and the Sailing Instructions. The error is now remedied with the publication of correct results.

Background

The Sailing Instructions state the following:

1. Unless the number of rounds was signalled in advance then after an appropriate sailing time has elapsed International Code Flag S would be displayed and boats would be finished when they next passed through the finish line.

2. Scoring would be calculated on the basis of average lap times.

3. Results would be calculated on the basis of average lap times.

After International Code Flag S had been raised, boats were finished, and the times recorded, as they next passed the finishing line. In calculating the published results the time of raising Code Flag S was reduced by a few minutes compared with the actual time of raising the flag which resulted in the last lap of 5 boats being excluded when calculating the corrected times. This was undertaken in order to make an adjustment because two classes of boat with the same PN (49er and 29er) had each been split at the time of raising the flag.

This has been reviewed. This method of adjustment of average lap times has not been used previously by the organising authority and is not part of suggested practice by the RYA, and is not therefore in accordance with the Rules or Sailing Instructions. The published results were incorrect and have now been amended.

Race Committee
3 January 2012

On a very cold Saturday last, we completed our second RYA Powerboat Level 2 training course this autumn, with five more Club members successfully gaining their certificates. They are Izzy Duce, Janet Willsmer, Adrian Bunting, Allen Burrell and Brant Chapman. Well done!

Since we registered as an RYA Training Establishment in 2009, we have trained 33 people up to Level 2. Before that, with the support of SMAC we helped a further 20 members gain this valuable qualification.

Our team, Tony Clarke, Toby Speller and Ken Clarke, get a huge buzz from teaching on this course and as a result, we know that we are adding to the pool of skilled powerboat drivers in the Club, providing safety cover for our racing. Without that cover, we cannot race.

If you would like to join this group and get your Level 2 qualification, contact any one of us through the office or email ken@sandstorm.abel.co.uk and we will endeavour to sign you up for one of our 2012 sessions. The charge of £25 covers the cost of training materials and contributes to the cost of fuel for the practical part of the course.
