Dan Henderson and George Hand finished a superb 4th place taking on some of Britain’s Olympic contenders scoring a 1st and two 2nds in the 49er fleet. Miles and Mason Burrage came a very credible 7th out of the 15 strong fleet, really looking good out there in the 16-20 knot breeze.

Newcomers to the 29er fleet this year, Alex Farrall and George Warrington placed 24th overall in the biggest fleet of 62 boats. Their 1st event after a few weekend training sessions with the RYA pre TT squad and they were very happy with their efforts.

9029 “Freestyle”- George and Ben Warrington
8401 “Spook”- Matthew Lloyd and Savva Tretyakov
8451 “Stress” – Alex Warrington and Laura Lloyd

Last week saw six TBYC cadets take to the water for the Cadet National Championships at Stone Sailing Club. After difficult year with wind conditions ruining most of the Indicator Series, Stone SC managed to do their usual magic and put on a fabulous event.

The Cadet being the only true junior racing dinghy with an upper age limit of 17, meant that this would be George’s last event. Some of the usual faces had decided to end their Cadet sailing at the previous Worlds in Germany so 67 boats were entered in total.

With George & Ben’s and Alex & Laura’s previous results saw them boosted up to the Gold Fleet. Matthew with our new member, Savva, who has recently joined TBYC from Russia where he had been crewing at National level were in the Silver fleet.

The Stone tides and different wind directions, gave all the competitors something to think about! It was like being at a different venue each day! George & Ben had a good event and finished overall in 22nd, a black flag and a broken rudder stock lost them 2 races but managed a 9th place in race 7. Alex & Laura started well and were in the teens overall half way through, but a bad last 2 days saw them drop back to 31st overall – with some massive lessons learnt about the effects of the tide! Matthew & Savva were 49th but had an interesting race 2 which saw the leaders stuck in the tide trying to fetch the windward mark when the breeze dropped. The boys put in a long tack inshore and out of the tide, found a puff of wind and managed to make the mark in 2nd place. Only to find the race abandoned when they were feet from the line! The Committee had decided it was an unfair race. The boys protested the committee but it was not upheld. Good effort none the less!

Another great event finishes and we move on to the final Open meetings and RYA Squad qualifiers. We would love more of you to join us and if your child would like to learn their race craft in this superb racing dinghy, please contact me. Many members stop and look at the Cadets in the dinghy park and remember their days in the Cadet fleet with fondness…..!

Thorpe Bay Yacht Club succeeds again….. in holding another great open meeting. This time for a new fleet not seen at TBYC – the Larks and an old fleet resurrected with the Cadets.

21 Larks and 14 Cadets took part in the 6 race series open, superbly run by Alan Willis and his team: Sally, Linda, Lisa, Bev and Alix. We had superb weather and a great breeze which made for some fantastic close racing. I think all who saw them sailing, were very impressed with the Lark.

The Cadet event was won by Max and Francesca Ingall with an impressive (near) clean sweep! We wish them luck in Poland where they will be representing GBR in the World Team!

The Lark event was won by Steve Hall and Si Haigton from Northampton Sailing Club with 11 points.

I have to own up to forgetting to thank 2 other people who helped out at the weekend. Steve Hopper was out with his rib both days to help with rescue cover and was able to take some great photos of the sailing – thanks Steve. But also to Chris Boshier – who not only gave up his weekend’s sailing to sit on the beech as our “Beech-master” but worked with myself and Alan to prepare all the relevant paperwork for the event and entering the results – Thanks very much Chris!

Cadet 8407 Fantasy Jess Quinlan and Alex Warrington

Well Alex and Jess are now back from Buenos Aires having had the trip and experiance of a lifetime. I hope you all were able to follow the event on the Argentinian Website as posted. There were lots of photos and articles posted daily.

As some of you know from experience the sailing conditions in B.A. are extremely hard. They had all wind ranges up to force 5, which is rare for that time of year. The water is very shallow and because of this it is extremely choppy. Couple that with a stronger tide than at TBYC and you’ll find its very tricky to get a cadet moving forwards!!

They had a rocky start but put in some decent results in the mid week. A black flag (pushing too hard!) made them carry a 35th which put the stoppers on a top 20 finish. Sadly a bad last day put them 26th overall.

All said and done, they qualified for the British Team in a tough race series throughout last year. The experience and what they learnt sailing in Argentina will stay with them for life and hopefully stand them in good stead for the future.

All this could not have been possible without the fantastic support and help from this club and friends and family. We were overawed by the level of support. To be part of a club such as this is a truly great thing and we are very grateful to everyone for their kind donations.

Thank You!!

George Warrington & Greg Watson – TBYC GBR 9029

Fishers Green Open Meeting

A popular “pond” event which this year was run in very difficult conditions. With not only 32 kts of breeze and very shifty but also sudden lulls and gusts caused by the many trees made this entertaining to watch to say the least! However Jess and Alex managed to secure a very solid 2nd overall in a 39 strong fleet. Showing off their great spinnaker work and boat handling, blasting them through the fleet after what was a lottery of a beat in most cases.

George and Greg did very well and were 23rd despite not sailing in the last 2 races after a bad capsize, which is a great improvement for him. Especially considering that it was Greg’s very first Cadet event and only his 3rd time in the boat!…… Well done Greg!

The UK National Cadet Class Association have heard that we are trying to revive the Cadet Class fleet at TBYC and many of you have already commented how great it is to see these boats return to the club. The Asscociation have very kindly given me 2 boats to help us revive Squadron 17 (last in operation over 20 years ago!)

Boat available immediately, ready to sail in the Winter Series!

I am looking for 2 cadets for one of these boats. You will have full responsibility for the boat – insurance, dinghy park fees and running repairs. But the use of the boat is FREE. It would also be desirable that you try to take part in the 3 Indicator events and the Nationals next year.

NB: These are not “beach boats” and are to be used for racing and sail training only.

If you want to know more or are interested in taking a boat please contact me: hwarrington@btinternet.com and come and join the only double-handed youth racing dinghy fleet. Or if you want to buy your own boat click here for the UKNCCA for sale list: http://www.mariner.co.uk/classifieds/pages/search/searchresult.asp

Jess Quinlan & Alex Warrington – Otters/TBYC GBR 8407
George Warrington & Johnny Van Ingen – TBYC/Stone GBR 9029
Molly Brown & Ben Warrington – Otters/TBYC GBR 3069

3rd Indicator – Parkstone YC

Great weekend’s sailing in 12kt breeze, albeit very shifty making the beats very complex and seeing some “outsiders” coming through the fleet. Jess and Alex finished 6th overall after a reasonably consistent event. Molly and Ben cam 3rd in the Silver fleet and were often in the top 10 at the windward mark. George and Johnny had a comendable 29th place in one race. Again, the chance and experiance of sailing in a huge fleet (75 entries) is a fantastic opportunity for our youngsters.

WORLD TEAM SELECTIONS

After this consistent weekend, Jess and Alex have qualified 5th out of the 7 boats selected to represent GBR at the coming World Championships to be held in Argentina at Christmas. This is a great achievement and we are all very proud of their success. This will now be Alex’s 3rd World Team selections since being asked to crew for Ollie Herve in Wales. Thanks Ollie!!

RESULTS: http://www.kbsuk.com/data/CadetEvents/data/results/mywebos.html

So now comes the difficult time of raising the funds to send them! If any club member has any ideas or whose company might be able to offer some form of sponsorship I would be very pleased to hear from you.
