At TBYC, we’ll be celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a 1950’s style Street Party on Bank Holiday Monday 4th June 2012 between 12.00-4.00pm, with traditional side shows including Stocks, freshly spun Candy Floss, Coconut Shy, Jubilee Cake Stall, Ice-cream and more….

The club kitchen (Butlers) will be serving traditional Fish & Chips in paper cones and fabulous Pie, Mash & Liquor at only £6.00 per person – food pre-order tickets are available from the club bar.

Please support this event as all proceeds will be donated to the RNLI.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: If you are able to help in any way with cake baking, setting up, providing Jubilee decorations or, most importantly, giving an hour or so of your time to man a stall, I’d be very pleased to hear from you – please call me on 07831 090816 or email [email protected].

Many thanks,

Diamond Summer Ball : 9th June 2012 – Wine Pre-orders

Pre-order your wine and get 10% discount!

Due to the size of our current wine list we do not stock a large amount of each wine, but re-order on a regular basis.  Therefore, to avoid disappointment on the evening of the Summer Ball, and to get 10% discount, we have introduced a wine pre-order system, that allows you to select the wines of your choice from our wine list prior to the event.

The pre-order forms are available to download from the link below or can be collected from the bar.

These must be completed and paid for no later than Monday 28th May 2012, to ensure that you get the 10% discount

If you do not complete the pre-order form, wines will still be available to purchase on the evening of the Ball, at full price, but the selection may be limited, due to overwhelming demand on the night.

Thank you.

4.7 or Radial Rig Required for Club Laser

Published by under Monohulls

There is now a Club Laser available to all members for use. The current rig on this Laser is the large Standard Rig which can be a handful to some of the lighter younger sailors. What I am looking for is an ex Laser Sailor who has a 4.7 or a Radial Rig sitting around not being used and in need of a worthy use. A 4.7 Sail & Rig would be a great addition to the Club Laser by making it more accessible to the lighter / junior sailors.
Condition not too important – Please let me know if you can help out with this request. Nick 0779 168 2001

UK Cadet Class World Team Selector, Parkstone Yacht Club.

Published by under Cadets

GBR 8514 & 9029 were in action last weekend at Parkstone YC in Poole. The occasion was the first of three UK Cadet Class Selector events to determine Team GBR for the International Cadet World Championships in Hobart at Christmas.

9029 with Matthew & Katy Lloyd came 49 overall with one OCS and an unfortunate DSQ. This masked some excellent sailing from Matt & Katy who have improved immensely over the winter. Within the six race series they had a top-fifteen finish. Without the said DSQ, 9029 would have finished 35th overall.

GBR 8541 with Alex Warrington & Laura Lloyd had a very erratic set of results – a 4th and a 50th in two races back to back. Overall they ended the weekend in 18th place out of a fleet of 77 with their World Team hopes very much alive.

Alex & Laura were selected in October last year to join the National Squad for training around the country during the winter; Matthew & Katy participated in the Development Squad, again for training through the winter.

For those readers unfamiliar with the International Cadet it is a ‘one-design’ class. This means anyone can make a boat but it must conform to specific measurements in terms of dimensions and weight. This differs from many other dinghy types at the club which are manufacturer-led classes. The boats are available in traditional wood or GRP.

The next event is the 2nd Selector at the Royal Corinthian YC in Burnham on 2nd & 3rd June. More details on the UK Class Association can be found at www.cadetclass.org.uk, Howard Warrington or myself.

Volunteers for duties please

Published by under Duties

There are 950 duties a year (excluding cadet duties) in the club’s duty roster. These are undertaken by around 275 members.  Most members do 3 duties a year. A few do more and some have less allocated to them at present.  Having these duties is essential for the smooth and safe running of the club’s sailing and racing activities.

At the moment there are around 20 duties over the year ahead which are not allocated to anyone including a couple over the next few weeks. These vacant duties have generally arisen where the duties were allocated to members who have subsequently not re-joined the club or are unavailable.

I am now hoping that volunteers will come forward to take on these duties.

The vacant duties are:

12 May 2012 – SS2 Crew: 19 May – SS5 Crew; 16 June – SS7 Crew;  17 June 2012 – SS5 Crew; 28 June 2012 – SS3 Helm; 12 July 2012 – SS3 Helm; 21 July 2012 – Race Officer &  SS7 Crew; 18 August 2012 – SS5 Crew; 25 August 2012 – SS3 Crew; 26 August 2012 – Assistant Race Officer & SS3 Crew; 27 August 2012 – SS3 Crew;  1 Sept 2012 – SS3 Crew;  29 September – SS3 Crew – 6 Oct 2012 – SS3 Crew;  21 Oct 2012 – SS3 Crew & SS7 Crew; 4 Nov 2012 – SS5 Crew; 2 Dec 2012 – SS5 Crew

Please volunteer if you can do one or more of these.  Ways to volunteer are:

  • If you have a DutyMan password – log-in, go to the volunteer section, and click on the ’unallocated duty; volunteer required’ symbol next to the duty marked ‘tba’.  The duty will be yours. DutyMan will immediately update the roster and send you and the club an email to confirm it.
  • Email [email protected]  saying what duty you can do. I’ll get back to you.
  • Phone me, Graham Dare, on 07946 413923.

Even if you have not done it before I’m sure we could start you off crewing in one of the displacement boats (SS2 or SS3), or even crewing  in one of the RIBS ( SS5 or SS7).

Thanks in advance to those who can volunteer.

Best Wishes

Graham Dare

A good bank holiday week-end of sailing coming up

Published by under Racing

Come on down and join in a good variety of races this week-end.

Saturday 5th May is the first of the club series races this year when we will be doing two short races back to back. First start at 11.00am and the second races as soon as possible after all have finished their first race.

Sunday 6th May is the Benfleet Shield Race. A mass start at 11.00 am – the course will be on the blackboard but is likely to be an initial beat then round the pier and off to a mark at the entrance to Benfleet Creek and back – probably rounding a few other buoys on the way.

Monday 7th May is the Not So Easy Race – a mass start at 12.00 midday – no-one yet knows the course – but it will be set on the day and must not be easy!!!
